JFK Assassination

Description

It has been 62 years since November 22, 1963 when President John F.  Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas,  Texas.  Despite the time lapse, Americans are still fascinated by the incident. The controversies and speculation  surrounding who conducted the shooting and why has perpetuated interest. This class will consist of two principle  components. First, examining the assassination--events preceding it, what happened in Dallas that day, and what  happened afterward. Was this the work of a 'lone gunman' as Senator Arlen Specter and the Warren Report  contend, or was it a coup D’Etat where political forces acted to accomplish something they might not have  achieved at the ballot box? Second, this class will be an exercise in historiography--how scholars do history. How  can two authors, viewing the same act and using the same basic materials, arrive at diametrically-opposed  conclusions? SRU history professor Dr. Thomas Pearcy will share his knowledge and experience on the subject.

Two Century Quilts: Restoring Vintage Quilts

Description

Quilting has been of interest for centuries both in providing warmth for one's family members and as an art form.  A  quilter could design and make a quilt top faster than it could be hand quilted. When a quilter passed on to her eternal  rest, often several quilt tops were waiting to be finished. The presenter finds these at yard sales, auctions and thrift  stores and finishes them to be displayed or used. It has become her passion. Learn how to restore these quilts  through a demonstration.
