The Institute for Learning in Retirement is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. ILR provides learning and recreational opportunities for personal fulfillment in an informal environment. Although ILR members tend to be older adults, any adult person in the community interested in intellectual, social, cultural and spiritual development can become a member. ILR promotes community engagement and depends on community members and resources.
The ILR offers classes, discussion groups, trips, tours, and social outings to its members. Most classes are offered at the Fowler Building, 165 Elm Street, Slippery Rock, PA. Some classes are offered using Zoom technology. The ILR class and trip events are held during two “semesters” which generally run from September through November and March through May. The offerings change from semester to semester (although some are offered every semester).
Our instructors are unpaid volunteers who are experts that love sharing their knowledge on the subjects they present. Classes are now taught by anyone with expertise in the field. They might be professional people, hobbyists, teachers, or retired professors. They may have acquired their knowledge through formal education or through diligent pursuit of an avocation. Trips are generally within the region, but occasionally there are bus trips—even overnight.
ILR members volunteer to serve as the organization’s leaders. Members elect the Board of Directors during the annual membership meeting in June.
The Board makes policies and oversees the management of the ILR’s activities.
The ILR also employs an independent contractor as an Executive Director to oversee daily operations.
As a volunteer-driven, members-led organization, the ILR relies on the dues paid by its members. Dues information can be found on the REGISTRATION tab.
The ILR encourages donations from members and supporters. See information about making a donation on PARTNERS tab.
