Dr. Frank W. Preston and Preston Park

Description

 Dr. Frank W. Preston was regarded by his peers to be a true genius.  By profession he was a glass  technologist. In that capacity, he founded Preston Laboratories in Meridian, PA.  His avocation was  ornithology and geology, which led to becoming the “Father of Moraine State Park”.  We’ll explore his  upbringing in Leicester, UK, and his move to the United States with his life here and groundbreaking work.   Historic photos of Preston Park will be shared in preparation for the companion trip to Preston Park.  Be sure  to register for that separately.

Description

Let's explore rhythm and making music together in a safe, healthy and fun group. No previous musical experience or talent is needed. Percussion instruments and hand drums will be provided, although you can bring your own. Each drum circle will include beginner instructions and will be

appropriate for returning participants as well.

Drone Geographical Mapping

Description

 Drone mapping refers to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to collect aerial data and generate maps,  models, and other types of visual representations of a worksite. Drone Mapping is a form of photogrammetry or  measuring from images. Participants will fly several types of drones used in mapping and inspection.

English - Tracing the Fascinating Language History

Description

 Shakespeare didn't speak Old English, but the earliest residents of the British Isles did.  The Norman  Conquest brought the French and Middle English while Shakespeare was Early Modern.  Trace all of this  and more -- grammar, words, dialects -- in a fascinating sequence.  Consider your own language  inheritance with its roots.

Description

 Join a three-part class on travel in England. This English Odyssey will provide an eventful, adventurous,  and photographic experience for all who attend. This class covers periods from 10,000 years ago at  Stonehenge, to 2,000 years ago at Roman Baths, to 1,000 years ago at Norman Castles, to 500 years  ago at Shakespeare’s home, to present day towns, coasts, and lakes.  Learn about our English heritage  and traditions as we take a trip of discovery.

 This class will introduce participants to possibilities of creating small whimsical wall hangings and other fiber  art forms of people and animals. The instructor will show a number of pieces of her work, and then give  participants time to begin creation of work of their own...  Following a career as a social worker and clinical counselor, with encouragement from friends, Linda wrote her  first book in 2007 and has written over 50 more. She will share her journey in writing and publishing and  answer questions from the class. She writes fiction for women as well as stories of strength, love, humor, and  hope. First Atlantic Crossing by Air

Description

 Learn about the 1919 competition between the US and Britain to be the first to cross the Atlantic Ocean by  air from the Island of Newfoundland. Every manner of air calamities greeted the competitors.  One American  and one British plane succeeded in crossing. Could each claim they won the race? The presentation will be  enhanced by visual images and Power Point slides.

Description

 The class will explore the careers and music of four popular American male singers. Included will be Bing  Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Bobby Darin. The course will explore how their work and careers  both reflected and helped shape American popular culture in the early and mid-20th century. Historic Mansions of Butler

Description

 Join local historian and storyteller Bill May for his "Historic Mansions of Butler".  The 60 minute PowerPoint presentation will take attendees on a virtual tour of 20 homes of Butler's historic  neighborhood of North McKean, East Fulton, and East Pearl Streets. Participants will hear fascinating stories and  see photos behind these beautifully persevered homes including Elm Court as well as their connections to Abraham Lincoln, Mark Twain and John D. Rockefeller, the Civil War and the Underground Railroad. The story of a local murder will also be featured!
