The Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) was founded in 2001 by Dr. Connie Smith, wife of then Slippery Rock University (SRU) President G. Warren Smith. The original concept was for retired SRU professors to share their subject matter expertise and knowledge with anyone interested.
The first semester, held in Spring 2001, saw the ILR hold 12 classes in various campus locations. From these humble beginnings, the ILR has grown to a point where each semester it typically offers a wide array of over 50 classes and 15 to 20 trips and outings.
The ILR gained legal incorporation as a non-profit organization. (See the “Partner & Sponsors” tab for our legal status.)
The activities of the Spring Semester were cancelled due to the Covid Pandemic. The activities resumed in an online format in the Fall semester and in person with a limited number of members.
The Board of Directors approved a project of rebranding the organization imagine in partnership with SRU Media Department.
